The 2019 NFL Draft Pick Who Caught My Attention: Christian Wilkins

Those who know me well know that I love to watch football. I must admit, I watched more college football than NFL in the last few years but I do still have a passion for the game. The 2019 NFL draft took place last week and I’m already excited to order a jersey for a rookie scooped up by the Miami Dolphins in the first round from Clemson. Mr. Christian Wilkins had a very impressive career as a student, as a football player and most importantly as a man.

According to the WSJ, as a student he earned a bachelors in 2.5 years and a masters in athletic leadership, all while being a standout defensive player for one of the top programs in the country. This is a very mature young man who is clearly disciplined, ambitious, and driven. Even more impressive is that he has implemented a money management system that allowed him to save up to $15,000 by the time he graduated. His system is made up of 4 different accounts, each with specific purposes for saving and spending. He allowed himself $150 spending money each month and once it was gone, he stopped spending on non-essentials.

“My mindset is just, ‘Save a whole lot more than you spend.”

— - Christian Wilkins, Miami Dolphin, 1st Round Draft Pick

Although none of his NFL money is fully guaranteed, he will sign a $15 million contract. I believe his future will be bright in the NFL but even when that career is over, he is a smart young man who has 2 degrees to carry him through his NFL retirement. I have no doubt that Wilkins will continue to be disciplined with his spending. Let’s hope he has an honorable agent and surrounds himself with a solid trustworthy team of professionals who are looking out for his best interest. I would love to help him implement some smart, long-term and tax-efficient strategies to grow that fortune safely! :)
